Few landscapes have shaped the idea of a national park as much as Yosemite Valley. Abraham Lincoln protected the Valley and the Mariposa Grove in 1864, and John Muir's writing helped turn the surrounding high country into a national park in 1890. Glaciers carved the granite into its famous forms: the 3,000-foot face of El Capitan, the sheared dome of Half Dome, and hanging valleys that pour waterfalls over the rim each spring.

Most visitors spend their time in the seven-mile Valley, but nearly 95 percent of the park is designated wilderness. Drive up Tioga Road in summer and you reach Tuolumne Meadows, a subalpine world of granite domes and wildflowers at 8,600 feet. In the south, the Mariposa Grove holds more than 500 giant sequoias, some over 2,000 years old.
